Jack London Pavilion Plaza

An Urban Retrofit- Jack London Square Pavilion Plaza, once an underutilized hardscape plaza was transformed into an outdoor green living room. The old Barnes and Noble plaza at the Foot of Broadway in Oakland was constrained with tough site conditions - an on-structure site, awkward, out of scale underutilized hardscape areas, and a very tight budget. TS Studio collaborated with their client to transform derelict hard surfaces, into soft, usable urban garden spaces. An outdoor amphitheater, playground, and fire pit, and other outdoor programs attract a diverse public throughout the day and night. Adaptable to waterfront and windy shoreline edges, native and drought tolerant ecology transforms part of Jack London into a seasonal garden, attracting not only visitors but also native bees, butterflies and birds to Jack London Square.
